Number of BMET Graduating into Job Market in 2006

I created the following table from degree completion data at the NCES website.  It is important to know the number of BMET graduates because there has been a consistent issue in the past few years of a shortage of qualified BMET’s seeking industry jobs in their field.  The number of graduates holding that degree in 2006 may hold a clue to the problem. The numbers are troublesome for the healthcare industry because the Bureau of Labor Statistics projections for new BMET jobs is approximately 800 per year ( Bureau of Labor Statistics Projections for New Biomedical Engineering Technology Jobs ).

In this case and at this time the NCES results and BLS forecast appears to be on target in terms of supporting published claims of a shortage of qualified BMET’s.   My interviews with Clinical Directors have also highlighted this fact.  I checked the program content for the Ph.D.  listed by the NCES which identifies BMET’s in the “biomedical technology” degree category.  The dissertations for this degree are specifically focused narrowly on one type of technology, the MRI.   Since it is focused on a particular instrument field and its enhancement I felt it was appropriate to include it here.  There were some M.S. degrees included in the results  but I did not include them because, on review, they had nothing to do with medical equipment let alone the technical aspects of medical equipment.  Additional research and analysis will be needed to get a better estimate of the number of BMET graduates actually looking for work.  It is interesting to note that 14% of all the BMET graduates in 2006 were women.
